Short history

In the beginning, from 1891 it was the tournament for French players only but at the 1897 women were added too. In 1925 became international tournament open for non-French players too. The tournament (known as French Open) started to attract the best players after it became the international event and the new stadium was built in 1928 when the tournament and stadium got the name by the well known French pilot who was the first one crossing the Mediterrane in 1913.

French open is annual tennis tournament held over last week of May and the first week of June. This year the tournament is from May 21st to June 10th.

French Open playground

Morden clay tennis court is much different from the original one used for Rolan Garros tournament. In the beginning, the use of clay was merely a practical solution. Long time back in 1880 in Cannes, the Renshaw Brothers, used powdered terra cotta to cover grass courts which were wilting in the heat.

Technology has developed by the time but the concept remains the same. The earth is covered with a total of five layers each around 80 centimeters in depth. The first layer is made up of stones, followed by gravel, clinker, limestone and finally a thin layer of crushed brick about two millimeters thick, giving the courts that specific color.

The difference in the composition of the clay surfaces around the world makes the playing characteristics variable, so Open French is an additional challenge for players.
